Workshop: Kickoff Meeting
Preparation
Most beneficial when done at the start of a project prior to
the team kick off meeting. This workshop is geared to assisting the
Project/Program Manager and selected key team leads prepare the messaging for a
Project Kick-off meeting that is consistent with RUP principles. Special
emphasis will be given to the project goals, project schedule, roles and
responsibilities, perceived risks at project start, known stakeholders, and key
tasks that need to be performed as part of the Inception Phase. At the end of
the workshop, the state of the kickoff presentation will be reviewed and team
assignments made to go forward.

Workshop: Creating a Tailored Development Case
Most beneficial when done early in the Inception Phase. After
a short presentation on what a Development Case is and its use within the
project, a draft Development Case will collaboratively be developed with the
Project Manager and key team leads. Each development discipline will be
addressed: Business Modeling, Requirements, Analysis & Design, Implementation,
Test, Deployment, Configuration Management, Project Management, and Environment.
Special emphasis will be given to artifacts, roles and responsibilities, the
point in the lifecycle that artifacts are baselined, and the tools that will
support the processes. The collaborative session represents the first half of
the day. In the second half, TeamPQT will transcribe the inputs into a draft
Development Case. At the end of the workshop, the state of the Development Case
will be reviewed and team assignments made to go forward. The workshop is also
useful if a draft document exists as an input to the workshop.
Workshop: Creating a RUP-oriented
WBS and an Inception Schedule
Most beneficial when done early in the Inception Phase. This
workshop works with the Project Manager and key team leads to formulate a WBS
for the project that will support RUP principles and the needs of the
organization. After gaining tentative agreement on a WBS structure, the workshop
transitions to evolve a schedule that addresses activities to be performed that
will lead to achieving the goals of the Inception Phase. At the end of the
workshop, the state of the WBS and the Inception Schedule will be reviewed and
team assignments made to go forward. The workshop is also useful if a draft WBS
and/or Inception Schedule exists as an input to the workshop.
Workshop: Creating a Phase Plan
Most beneficial when done in the Inception Phase after Use
Cases have been Identified and an initial prioritization has been done regarding
architectural significance and business value. This workshop will work with the
Project Manager and the key team leads in formulating a Phase Plan for the
project. Special emphasis will be given to determining an appropriate number of
iterations by phase for the project; target dates for Phase transitions and
iteration ends; allocating objectives for each iteration as represented by use
cases (or use case scenarios), key risks, and key nonfunctional requirements;
and top level schedule and cost budgets for each iteration. At the end of the
workshop, the state of the Phase Plan will be reviewed and team assignments made
to go forward. The workshop is also useful if a draft Phase Plan exists as an
input to the workshop.
Workshop: Creating a Measurements
Plan
This workshop can be done anytime in the lifecycle, as there
can be benefit even late in the lifecycle if quality metrics are being
underused; however, it is most beneficial when done in the Inception Phase after
a Development Case has been drafted. After a short presentation on Practical
Software Measurement (PSM) and the use of measurements on projects, a draft
Measurements Plan will collaboratively be developed with the Project Manager and
key team leads. At the end of the workshop, the state of the Measurement Plan
will be reviewed and team assignments made to go forward. The workshop is also
useful if a draft Phase Plan exists as an input to the workshop.
Workshop: Creating an Iteration
Plan/Schedule
This workshop can be done for any iteration in the lifecycle
so long as a Phase Plan is in existence. This workshop works with the Project
Manager and key team leads to formulate an Iteration Plan/Schedule for an
upcoming iteration. Special attention will be given to team members
collaborating in accordance with RUP principles, achieving the objectives of the
iteration, and progressing towards the objectives of the phase. At the end of
the workshop, the state of the Iteration Plan/Schedule will be reviewed and team
assignments made to go forward. The workshop is also useful if a draft Iteration
Plan/Schedule exists as an input to the workshop.
Workshop: Phase End Review
This workshop can be done at the conclusion of any lifecycle
phase: Inception, Elaboration, Construction, or Transition. It can be done as
the Phase End Review or can be used to prepare the project team prior to being
reviewed by a formal governance team. The workshop works with the Project
Manager and team leads to review the degree to which the team has satisfied the
goals for the Phase. Special attention will be given to phase objectives, risk
resolution; test results, open issues, lessons learned, and plan modifications
going forward.
Workshop: Iteration End Review
This workshop can be done at the conclusion of any iteration.
It can be done as the Iteration End Review (aka Iteration Assessment) or can be
used to prepare the project team prior to being reviewed by a formal governance
team. The workshop works with the Project Manager and team leads to review the
degree to which the team has satisfied the goals for the Iteration. Special
attention will be given to iteration objectives, risk resolution; test results,
open issues, lessons learned, and plan modifications going forward.
